... and continued to tuck in while Gladys ladled out mushy peas. | Making good progress were Sandra and Reg Aston (on the left) ... | ... a whole lot of other members .. | |||
... including Joyce Briscoe, Muriel Lines and Ron McHale. | When everything was cleared away the maestro Gerald Hanrahan took over, regaling the assembled company with stories of outings and getting other members to join in with their recollections. | He also introduced Cheryl Bailey from the Lottery funded Recording the Workshop of the World project. Cheryl explained that they are scanning in and cataloguing all the records in the local archives which relate to Black Country industry; and they were trying to collect as many of people's memories of local industry as possible to go along with the photos and documents. There will be a special Bilston-centred event at the Craft Gallery in Mount Pleasant on 8th September - so do make a note to turn up, from 11.00 onwards. |

More memories of holidays and end of the pier shows were evoked by Morecambe and Wise (aka Kath and Alma) signing "Bring me Sunshine"; | and by the splendid 8 year old Liam, with his banjo and his Little Stick of Blackpool Rock. | In the best traditions of seaside jaunts, there was a knobbly knees competition, to which our President, Trevor Genge, kindly contributed one knee. Your reporter does now know who suffered the indignity of winning and, indeed, thinks it best to draw a veil over the whole thing. |
Some dignity returned to the occasion when the raffle was drawn, and then everyone went home, insisting that they had had a great day out.
As ever our thanks to all the committee members and other who put in all the hard work making the arrangements and running the events, to those who contributed the raffle prizes and everyone else involved.
