MEMORIES of THE BLACK COUNTRY

Cock Fighting Photo display Fighting Spurs Leather Muffs
Derek with a  display of a part of his collection of cockfighting memorabilia.
It includes Hogarth's print (in the centre) and (on the left) a series of prints showing each stage of a cockfight.
.(The photo was taken at the Black Country Memories Club meeting on 14th February 2001.
Two pairs of fighting spurs.  The cock's natural spurs were removed and replaced by these steel spurs.
The bottom pair have been designed to bend sharply upwards, making them difficult to withdraw and very destructive;  such spurs were illegal.
The cocks were trained.  But you had to prevent them damaging each other while training.
So these leather "muffs" were used to cover the spurs.
