There was a board about children's games, which
included skipping and clapping songs used in Blakenhall in the
1950s, provided by Ang Johnson.
Here Sandra Aston demonstrates to another member the
layout for hopscotch. Interestingly, we came across two
different payouts. |

Jim Speakman had done his usual good job in getting
publicity for the event in the local press and we were very pleased with
the response. Across the middle of the room we had long tables carrying
all sorts of games and toys which members had brought along. |
 |
. | On the far left you can just see the board Reg Aston had
made for playing marleys (which is what we called marbles round here)
and the wool, cotton reel and pins for corking (which is what we called
french knitting round here). You might also be able to spot the
wooden hoop, the tin can telephone, a skipping rope, diabolo, cup and
ball, darts, a catapult and some local sporting trophies. Further along
the table are Reg's shove ha'penny board, a quoit, Kath's top, a yoyo, a tip cat
made by Jim Speakman and a bagatelle table lent by Jenny Lupton |
 |
We also had a display of medals awarded to local
man Percy Richards and a very interesting account, with many
photos, of sport at Bilston Girls' High School in the 1950s by
Barbara Richards. One of the score cards showed Barbara
playing cricket against Wolverhampton Girls High School and
bowling out (for a duck) a girl called Heyhoe. Now who
could that be?
We hope to be able to get this story onto this web
site one day. (Sorry about the quality of this photo: the
high contrast lighting conditions defeated your reporter's
limited skills).
