Our meeting at Holy Trinity Social Club
EDUCATION IN BILSTON23rd April 2008 |
Master Alan Hadley turned up wearing his Villiers School cap - and George Phillpot maintains his dignity. | But Alan had also brought along a whole collection of documents about education in the area. Many of them traced the career of his son from a Bilston primary school to first class honours at university.
And Joe Creswell had brought along ... | .. his football medals presented by the Wednesbury Schools Athletic Association during Joe's schooldays. |
By two o'clock everybody - from Reg Aston on the left to Henry Metzger on the right - was settled down for what was definitely the highlight of the meeting . the Villiers School Choir.
... Several members had visited the school and spoken to the children as part of their anniversary celebrations. This return visit by more than 50 children and three teachers was more than welcome. The choir, under their teacher Mrs. Hain, sang very well and their enjoyment, enthusiasm and energy came bursting from the stage. Everyone was delighted and at the end an encore was demanded - and duly given. | After the performance the members of the choir came and talked to the members of the Club - their fan club by now. Everyone was delighted by the youngster's efforts. |
Once the choir had left for their drinks and biscuits, Gerald Hanrahan held centre stage with anecdotes about local schools and encouraging members to contribute their own. | Ron Rogers contributed an anecdote in the form of a song about Bilston girls - the full text of which is not available on this web site. |
And then the raffle was drawn - with our usual thanks to all those who contributed an excellent and large range of prizes. And then we all went home, with a bit more spring in our step, thanks to the infectious vitality of the choir.
